Mark Francois MP participating in the charity abseil at FitzWimarc School, to raise money for the school’s memorial garden.

A South Essex MP abseiled down the side of a large block at one of his local secondary schools, to help raise funds for the school’s memorial garden project.

Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, took time this bank holiday weekend to take part in an abseil down the side of a main teaching block, which is due to be demolished, as part of a complete rebuild of the school, following problems identified during the RAAC crisis, several years ago.

The School charged participants (who included teachers and both current and past pupils) £50 to undertake this exciting challenge, in order to raise funds to develop their memorial garden, which was established a while ago, to commemorate both past teachers and pupils from the school.

Speaking about the happy event, Mark said:

“As someone who has strongly supported the plans for the rebuild of Fitz - which should hopefully commence later this year or early next - I wanted to partake in this charity challenge, before the old teaching block we descended from is demolished. It was a great view across Rayleigh from up top, especially as we were all participating in a very worthwhile cause. I wish the school all the best with this key project.”
